While there is no definite answer when exactly you can start to give your toddler peanut butter, there are a few precautions you might want to take.
First if anyone in your family has a history of allergies to nuts or any other food related allergies it might be best to hold off until your toddler is around the age of 3.
If for some reason you have any concerns about nut allergies it is best to wait.
If there are no known allergies it is safe to start serving your toddler peanut butter after the age of 1.
Do not give spoonfuls of peanut butter as it is difficult for your toddler to swallow, also avoid whole nuts as they present a choking hazard.
Signs to look for from an allergic reaction to nuts:
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of the mouth/throat
- Hives
- Vomiting/diarrhea
- Loss of conciseness
If you notice any of these symptoms call your heath care provider or 911 immediately.
It is always best to take the advice of your pediatrician.
